Transafam Power Plant Inspection
01. The Challenge
Transafam Power Limited operates the Afam power generation facility in Rivers State, one of Nigeria’s key gas-fired power plants contributing electricity to the national grid. Maintaining reliable power output requires continuous monitoring of generation assets, operational systems, and plant efficiency.
Following the operational takeover of the Afam facility in 2021 and ongoing efforts to improve generation performance, Transafam sought technical insights that could support better equipment reliability, operational efficiency, and long-term asset performance.
Emerald Industrial Co. FZE was engaged to support a technical inspection and engineering review aimed at identifying opportunities for operational improvements within the plant.
02. The Solution
Emerald Industrial Co. FZE, working alongside its technical partners, deployed an engineering team to the TransAfam Power Plant to support a critical Accessory Gearbox (AGB) swap on one of the facility’s gas turbine units.
The operation required detailed planning, coordination with plant engineers, and precise execution due to the complexity of turbine support systems and the need to minimise operational disruption within the power generation facility.
Emerald’s role involved supporting the safe removal and replacement of the turbine’s accessory gearbox, a key mechanical component responsible for driving auxiliary systems essential to turbine operation. The project demanded careful mechanical handling, alignment checks, and strict adherence to safety and operational procedures.
Key activities included:
- On-site engineering support for the AGB swap operation
- Mechanical disassembly and removal of the existing accessory gearbox
- Installation and alignment of the replacement AGB unit
- Coordination with plant engineers and technical partners
- Compliance with safety and operational protocols during turbine maintenance
03. The Result
The successful execution of the Accessory Gearbox (AGB) swap restored the operational readiness of the affected turbine support system and helped ensure the continued reliability of the power generation unit at the TransAfam Power Plant.
Through coordinated effort between Emerald Industrial, its technical partners, and plant engineers, the gearbox replacement was completed safely and efficiently while maintaining strict operational and safety standards required within a live power generation environment.
The intervention contributed to improved mechanical integrity of the turbine’s auxiliary systems and supported ongoing efforts to maintain stable and reliable power generation at the facility.
By providing on-site engineering support and technical collaboration during this critical maintenance activity, Emerald Industrial reinforced its capability to support complex industrial operations within the power and energy sector.
